§ Mr. Cyril D. Townsendasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what increases in police and other manpower he has approved for the six metropolitan joint police authorities in 1987–88.
§ Mr. HurdThe following increases are contained in the establishment schemes for the six authorities for 1987–88, which I have laid before Parliament today.

1 The increase of 75 police posts for Northumbria was announced on 18 December 1986. Thirty-five of the posts were with immediate effect and 40 with effect from 1 April 1987.
2The increase in the number of civilians in the West Midlands police is expected to release 382 police officers to operational duties.
