§ Mr. NewtonGross current expenditure by English local authority social services departments for each of the 109W years 1978–79 to 1986–87 is shown in the table at cash and at 1986–87 prices. Revaluation to 1986–87 prices has been carried out by reference to the Gross Domestic Product deflator. Social services departments as such did not exist prior to 1 April 1971 so it is not possible to give comparable expenditure figures for years before then.

§ Mr. NewtonThe total numbers of staff of local authority social services departments, expressed as whole-time equivalents, in each year between 1979 and 1985 (the latest year for which figures are available) are given in the table. Social services departments did not come into existence until 1 April 1971 and comparable figures for 1959 and 1969 are not available.
