HC Deb 02 April 1987 vol 113 cc564-5W
Mr. Tony Banks

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what was the level of British Government aid to Nicaragua in 1986.

Mr. Chris Patten

In 1986 British bilateral aid to Nicaragua consisted of:

  1. a. Support for small development projects co-financed with British voluntary agencies under the joint funding scheme. Eleven projects were approved in the financial year 1985–86 to a value of some £100,000.
  2. b. £82,500 in response to an appeal by Christian Aid to help displaced persons in Nicaragua.
  3. c. £3,200 in technical co-operation for training in Britain.

Nicaragua also benefited from European Community aid to the region, to which Britain makes a substantial contribution.
