HC Deb 02 April 1987 vol 113 cc588-9W
23. Mr. Silvester

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what proportion of defendants currently waiting to stand trial in England and Wales have been detained for a period in excess of 110 days.

Mr. Mellor

This information is not available centrally but it is estimated that on 31 January 1987 about 27 per cent. of the untried population in prison department establishments in England and Wales were initially remanded into custody more than 110 days earlier. This period includes any time spent on bail after the original remand in custody.
