Mr. Foulkes

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many community psychiatric nurses are employed by each district health authority; and in each case, how many are based in hospitals, and how many in the community.

Such information as is available is shown in the table. It is not possible to identify staff as being specifically based in hospitals or in the community. Figures for September 1985 are the latest available to this level of detail.

  1. (1) These figures include all registered and enrolled nurses and unqualified nursing staff employed in the community psychiatric service. It is not possible to provide separate information for those nurses who have undertaken the post-basic community psychiatric nursing courlse.
  2. (2) Because the identification of these staff depends on accurate recording of location and occupation details on district health authority payrolls it is possible that some staff engaged on the duties in question are not actually recorded as working on those duties. Some community staff are hospital based and are recorded as hospital staff. Also some may be on the payroll of one district but working in another.
  3. (3) Includes staff of London post-graduate special health authorities.
  4. (4) All figures have been rounded to nearest one whole-time equivalent.
