56. Mr. Maclennan

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on his last meeting with representatives of the external services of the BBC.

Mr. Eggar

During his visit my right hon. and learned Friend discussed a range of external broadcasting issues with the top management of the external services. He also took the opportunity to underline the importance of the fundamental principle of accountability for public funds as well as our view that it is right that the National Audit Office should have access to the BBC external services to carry out economy, efficiency and effectiveness examinations.
