HC Deb 02 April 1987 vol 113 cc605-6W
Mr. Simon Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what assessment he has made of the effects of increasing levels of ammonia in the United Kingdom since 1957; and where the cases occurred.

Mr. Waldegrave

Although ammonia deposition contributes to overall nitrogen loading and in soils could be contributing to increased acidification, no evidence has been found in the United Kingdom of any direct effect of ammonia on crops, trees and vegetation other than in the most extreme case of accidental releases of ammonia from fertiliser plants and industrial processes.
