§ 51. Mrs. Roeasked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he will give an estimate of the 555W overall saving so far and the average saving per household which has resulted from the abolition of the Greater London council.
§ Mr. ChopeMy hon. Friend announced on 19 March, at columns558–60, that the Government estimate that long-term annual savings of some £100 million per annum will result from staff savings following abolition. We expect that about half these savings will be as a direct result of abolition of the GLC.
In addition, the London residuary body estimates that some £129 million of GLC closing revenue balances and some £141.4 million capital receipts arising from its own disposals of capital assets and repayments of principal on loans is available for distribution by 31 March 1988. This cash is being distributed to all rating authorities in the area and amounts to about £100 per household.
