§ Mr. David Marshallasked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is his estimate of (a) the total number of new jobs created and (b) the total number of jobs lost, in the road passenger transport industry in Scotland as a result of the Transport Act 1985.
§ Mr. AncramIt is too early to say what the overall effects on employment of the Transport Act 1985 will be. However, the Act gives operators considerable opportunities to develop new services which will mean more jobs, reversing the long term decline of the industry. It will also create other opportunities — for instance, in bus building.
