HC Deb 29 October 1986 vol 103 cc191-2W
Mr. Hicks

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will list, for the last year for which figures are available, the total amounts of financial assistance made available for the Scottish Development Agency and the Highland and Islands Development Board, respectively, both in total and per head of the insured population for the areas covered.

Mr. Lang

The information for 1985–86 is set out in the table:

SDA HIDB
Total resources made available
£ million 127.9 39.6
Economically active population 2,242,650 146,320
Per Capita Resources made available £ 57 271

The economically active population corresponds broadly with the insured population (a term which is now obsolete). Figures have been derived from the 1981 census. Certain functions of the SDA's remit extend to the whole of Scotland but for the purpose of this answer the SDA's area has been defined as that part of Scotland not covered by the HIDB.
