56. Mr. John Mark Taylorasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on political co-operation within the European Community since Spanish accession.
§ Mrs. ChalkerSince the accession of Spain and Portugal on 1 January 1986, new treaty provisions in European political co-operation (forming title III of the Single European Act) have been concluded, and the Twelve have intensified their co-operation. For example, they have taken a firm stand against Libyan State supported terrorism, have issued major statements and taken measures against South Africa; and we have worked closely together in the Helsinki process including the recently concluded Stockholm CDE talks. Both Spain and Portugal have played a valuable role in the work of European political co-operation.
