HC Deb 27 October 1986 vol 103 cc45-6W
Dr. Cunningham

asked the Paymaster General if he will make a statement on the first 18 months' work of the five city action teams, giving details of the officials and individuals involved in each team.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

They pursue Government urban policy objectives to reduce the number of people in acute housing stress, reduce the number of derelict sites and void buildings and increase job opportunities and the employability of certain groups. Total Government provision for expenditure in the priority areas related to these objectives was estimated in 1985–86 to amount to around £670 million. The Government have provided an additional £1 million to the Newcastle-Gateshead city action team to provide pump-priming finance as part of its response to the recent shipbuilding closures in the north-east.
