HC Deb 21 October 1986 vol 102 cc764-5W
Mr. Andrew F. Bennett

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will list in the Official Report the average teacher's salary, full-time equivalent, in schools, non-advanced further education, advanced further education and universities in cash terms, real terms and indexed against the rise in average earnings for each year since 1975.

Mrs. Rumbold

The information is set out in the table.

Mr. Wareing

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will make a statement on the teachers' pay dispute in England and Wales; and what current plans he has to improve their pay and conditions of service.

Mrs. Rumbold

Following the signing of "Heads of Agreement" on 29 July, talks continue between the employers and unions. The Government have long made clear their willingness to allow extra spending on teachers' pay in return for a satisfactory pay structure and a clarification of the teachers' contract which would secure the provision of uninterrupted education.
