HC Deb 21 October 1986 vol 102 c814W
Mr. Wareing

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will make a statement on the recent annual meeting in Washington DC of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

Mr. Ian Stewart

At the annual meetings of the IMF/IBRD, the interim and development committees noted that prospects for world growth were better in 1987, while recognising that the debt problem remains severe for many countries. They stressed the importance of determined implementation of growth-orientated adjustment along the lines proposed in 1985 by United States Treasury Secretary Baker and reaffirmed their commitment to ensure adequate funding for the World Bank.

For details, I refer the hon. Member to the communiqués of the interim and development committees, copies of which are being made available in the House of Commons Library.
