HC Deb 21 October 1986 vol 102 c870W
Mr. Cash

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many persons over the age of 65 years have the earnings rule applied to them.

Mr. Lyell

The rule applies to women aged 60–64 and men aged 65–69. An estimated 3,500–4,000 people are affected. A further 100,000 people are estimated to be deferring retirement, probably because they would be affected by the earnings rule.

These figures are based on 1982–83 survey data. Up-to-date information should be available in early 1987.
