asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what information he has as to how many new day nursery places have been provided by social services departments since 1979.

It is estimated that between 1979 and 1986 the number of day nursery places provided by Social Services Departments in England increased by over 500. The numbers for each year are given in the table.
