§ Mr. Foulkesasked the Secretary of State for Scotland by what means radioactive products are transported to and from Chapelcross nuclear power station; what directives or authorisations have been issued by his Department on this matter; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Moore[pursuant to the reply, 26 June 1986, c. 314]: I have been asked to reply.
Spent fuel flasks are transported by road between Chapelcross and British Nuclear Fuel's reprocessing plant at Sellafield. Low level radioactive waste is also moved by road to the disposal site at Drigg.
The containers in which radioactive materials are transported are certified by my Department as meeting the stringent standards of the International Atomic Energy Agency. These require safeguards to be incorporated into the design of the containers, so that even a severe accident would not give rise to any significant risk of leakage.
