HC Deb 21 October 1986 vol 102 c868W
Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether, in the light of paragraph 3.2.5 of the MRC 1986 corporate plan, he will establish at least one new centre for the study of and care of patients who have Alzheimer's disease; and if he will make a statement.

Mrs. Currie

It is for the Medical Research Council, which receives a grant-in-aid from the Department of Education and Science, to decide whether a centre for research into Alzheimer's disease should be established. The recognition of this need in its 1986 corporate plan is welcomed, as is the council's known attachment of some priority to meeting it. The care of people suffering from Alzheimer's disease, and the provision of support for relatives and other carers, are important matters for health and social services authorities to consider when planning and providing a comprehensive range of local mental health services in accordance with Government policy.
