HL Deb 06 October 1986 vol 480 c111WA
Lord Molloy

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What new initiatives are envisaged to implement Resolution of the United Nations No. 582 of 1986 and related UN Resolutions now that the United Kingdom has assumed Presidency of the Council of the European Communities.

The Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (Baroness Young)

Since its adoption in February, the EC has urged Iran and Iraq to seek a negotiated settlement to their conflict on the basis of Security Council Resolution No. 582. This process has continued during the British Presidency, in particular by a statement on 6th August. During his speech to the United Nations General Assembly on 23rd September, which was made on behalf of the European Community, my right honourable and learned friend the Foreign Secretary urged both sides to accept that the conflict can only be brought to an end by negotiation and to implement SCR 582. We continue to play our full part in discussions with like-minded countries at the United Nations and elsewhere with a view to obtaining the early implementation of the resolution.
