asked the Secretary of State for Energy (1) how much has been expended by Her Majesty's Government on research into the harnessing of tides for the provision of energy during each of the past five years for which records are available;

(2) how much has been expended by Her Majesty's Government on research into the harnessing of solar energy during each of the past five years for which records are available;

asked the Secretary of State for Energy (1) what are his proposals for the provision of resources for research into the harnessing of the tides for energy purposes during the years 1987 and 1988, respectively.

(2) what are his proposals for the provision of resources into the harnessing of solar energy during the years 1987 and 1988, respectively;

(3) what are his proposals for the provision of resources for research into the harnessing of wind energy during the years 1987 and 1988, respectively;

(4) what are his proposals for the provision of resources for research into the harnessing of hydro-electric energy during the years 1987 and 1988, respectively.

Planned expenditure expected for 1986–87 in the Department of Energy's renewables research and development programme for wind, tide, solar and hydro-electric power is given below:
