§ Mr. Wigleyasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations he has received, in the context of the Foreign Ministers' meeting at Jakarta last month, concerning political prisoners in Indonesia; whether he took these questions up with the Indonesian authorities; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. RentonSeveral hon. Members have written to me about the recent executions of nine people in Indonesia. In early October Her Majesty's ambassador in Jakarta expressed to the Indonesian authorities at a high level the collective concern of the Governments of the member states of the European Community about these executions. He also lodged a strong appeal for clemency for others currently under sentence of death. The Indonesian Government were fully aware of our views when my right hon. and learned Friend visited Jakarta for the EC-ASEAN Foreign Ministers meeting. He did not therefore raise the matter with them again on that occasion.
