§ Lord Eden of Wintonasked Her Majesty's Government:
Whether it is true tha there has been a recent development on a large scale in the Cayman Islands of video cassette piracy based on material obtained from the latest communication satellites; and if so whether in view of the recent extension to several British dependencies, including Bermuda, Gibraltar, Monserrat, British Virgin Islands and the Isle of Man, of anti-piracy amendments to the UK copyright legislation they will now arrange for urgent consultation with the Cayman Islands about the desirability of similar Orders in Council being adopted by that territory.
§ The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Trade and Industry (Lord Lucas of Chilworth)The Cayman Islands authorities were consulted at the end of 1983 as to whether they wished to have the Copyright Act 1956 (Amendment) Act 1982 and the Copyright (Amendment) Act 1983 extended to the islands. They replied that they did not.
The Government have recently received representations that video piracy in the islands has been increasing, and in the light of these, are consulting further with the authorities there.
