HC Deb 24 November 1986 vol 106 c50W
Mr. Bruinvels

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will call for a report from the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis (a) as to the number of prosecutions for unlawful use of bus lanes by unauthorised vehicles in London in each of the last three years and (b) as to the number of vehicles wheelclamped in each year since wheel clamps were introduced; and, of these, how many were vehicles in respect of which diplomatic immunity was claimed.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

The Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis has indicated that statistics in respect of bus lane offences are not recorded separately and cannot be obtained without disproportionate cost. Wheelclamping in central London commenced on 16 May 1983. Wheelclamps are not affixed to vehicles in relation to which a claim of diplomatic immunity is believed to arise. The table below shows the total number of vehicles clamped in each year, and the number of fees waived following a claim of diplomatic immunity.

Year Vehicles clamped Fees waived
1983 (from 16 May 1983) 26,808 156
1984 44,101 110
1985 34,801 48
1986 (up to 14 November 1986) 27,841 4
