HC Deb 24 November 1986 vol 106 c85W
Mr. Ernie Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many miles of the drains and sewerage system in Scotland (a) were built in the 19th century and (b) are regarded in need of repair or replacement; and what percentage of the total mileage each of these represents.

Mr. Ancram

Precise figures are not available, but it is estimated that there are some 15,000 miles of sewers in Scotland of which about 30 per cent. were built in the 19th century. Regional and islands councils have been encouraged to survey the condition of the sewers, particularly those in critical parts of systems. This work is proceeding. Preliminary findings indicate that the structural condition of sewers may in general be better than has been suggested. Sewer repair, renovation and replacement are undertaken routinely by local authorities within their capital expenditure programmes.
