§ 19. Mr. Fallonasked the Secretary of State for Energy whether he will estimate the number of jobs directly and indirectly dependent in the northern region on the nuclear industry.
§ Mr. GoodladThere are some 24,000 people directly employed by the nuclear industry in the north of England. A much larger number are employed in the construction, manufacturing and service industries which support them. Well over 100,000 jobs depend directly or indirectly on the industry over the country as a whole. United Kingdom also benefits from the important contribution which nuclear power makes to the cheapening of our electricity supplies.
