HC Deb 24 November 1986 vol 106 c11W
19. Mr. Fallon

asked the Secretary of State for Energy whether he will estimate the number of jobs directly and indirectly dependent in the northern region on the nuclear industry.

Mr. Goodlad

There are some 24,000 people directly employed by the nuclear industry in the north of England. A much larger number are employed in the construction, manufacturing and service industries which support them. Well over 100,000 jobs depend directly or indirectly on the industry over the country as a whole. United Kingdom also benefits from the important contribution which nuclear power makes to the cheapening of our electricity supplies.
