HC Deb 24 November 1986 vol 106 cc44-5W
Mr. Rooker

(2) what is the total local authority housing stock sold since 1979, giving a breakdown of sales (a) under right to buy legislation (b) other sales to sitting tenants and (c) sales of vacant dwellings, listing how many in each category were (i) houses, (ii) flats, (iii) maisonettes, (iv) bungalows and (v) others.

Mr. John Patten

[pursuant to his answer, 17 November 1986, c. 44–45]: Between April 1979 and June 1986 nearly 750,000 council houses were sold in England at a price after discount of £8 billion. These sales have given individual tenants greater control over their own homes and environment, are leading to more variety and social diversity on former council estates, and have given authorities very substantial additional resources for other capital work.
