asked the Secretary of State for Energy what steps is he taking to promote the use of energy from land-fill gas.

On 28 October I addressed a land-fill gas conference in Solihull at which over 200 delegates attended. The event was part of the United Kingdom-United States collaborative effort on energy r,d and Demonstration.

My Department has so far committed £1.85 million through its r,d and Demonstration Scheme programmes towards the use of land-fill gas as fuel. The promotion and take-up of this technology should eventually lead to the production of around 3 million tonnes of coal equivalent a year from land-fill sites.
