Mr. Dobson

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) what is the percentage of patients undergoing kidney transplants involving an organ not donated by a sibling who are still alive (a) three months, (b) six months, (c) one year and (d) five years after the operation;

(2) what is the percentage of patients undergoing kidney transplants involving an organ donated by a sibling who are still alive (a) three months, (b) six months, (c) one year and (d) five years after the operation;

Mrs. Currie

Information from the European Dialysis and Transplant Association on survival rates of patients transplanted between 1975 and 1984 with kidneys removed from different types of donors is as follows:

Sibling live donor Percentage Other live donor Percentage Cadaver donor Percentage
Survival rate after
Three months 97 95 92
Six months 97 93 89
One year 95 91 86
Five years 87 81 71
Number of patients at risk for the analysis 412 546 6,902

These figures need to be interpreted with some caution; they are not directly comparable because of the number of variables involved.
