HC Deb 24 November 1986 vol 106 c78W
Mr. Hill

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what progress is currently taking place during the British presidency of the European Council of Ministers to achieve adoption of the proposed seventh directive which clarifies the legal status of duty-free allowances for intra-Community travellers.

Mr. Brooke

The seventh directive, concerning duty-free goods for travellers, has been made a priority for the United Kingdom Presidency. Discussions have taken place and some progress has been made towards reconciling conflicting national requirements, but I am optimistic that our essential interests will be provided for when discussions are resumed shortly.
