HC Deb 24 November 1986 vol 106 c71W
Mr. Stott

asked the Secretary of State for Transport how much he intends to spend on the 1986 Christmas drink and drive campaign; and how this compares in real terms with the 1985 campaign.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

This year, we estimate expenditure of about £1.5 million to include not only advertising but production and distribution of the free booklet "The Facts about Drinking and Driving" and the cost of offering a free telephone inquiry service to the public. A further improvement in the campaign, designed to secure better value for money, was its use for the first time during May and June when drink-related road accidents tend to peak. It will continue in the forthcoming Christmas and new year period.

Spending on the drink and drive phase of the Government's 1985 road safety publicity campaign was approximately £1.4 million wholly devoted to advertising in the Christmas and new year period.
