HC Deb 19 November 1986 vol 105 c248W
Mr. Adley

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will list the total number of inspectors employed by his Department to hear planning appeals for each of the last 10 years.

Mr. Tracey

The full-time housing and planning inspectors in England in post on 1 April for the last 10 years were:

Number
1977 199
1978 197
1979 198
1980 190
1981 191
1982 191
1983 177
1984 169
1985 171
1986 183

About 60 per cent. of the work-load of salaried inspectors is on work other than planning appeals made under section 36 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1971. Part-time fee-paid inspectors currently undertake roughly half of the appeals made by written representations; their contribution is equal to the work load of a further 28 full-time inspectors.

Mr. Adley

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will list the number of inspectors employed by his Department who have previously been employed by builders or developers.
