HC Deb 17 November 1986 vol 105 c50W
Mr. Dalyell

asked the Prime Minister (1) if she will make a statement on Her Majesty's Government's policy towards publication of books by former members of the security services;

(2) if she will make a statement on the measures being taken by Her Majesty's Government to restrain publication in Australia about the security services.

The Prime Minister

Members and former members of the security service owe a lifelong duty of confidentiality to the Crown. Unauthorised publication by them of books about their work violates this obligation. The Attorney-General has accordingly applied in the Supreme Court of New South Wales for an injunction to prevent publication of a book by Mr. Peter Wright, a former member of the security service. The case is sub judice in Australia.
