Mr. Barron

asked the Secretary of State for Energy what was the total expenditure on renewable energy sources in 1985–86; and what were the amounts sent in each of the following categories: (a) wind, (b) wave, (c) geothermal aquifiers, (d) geothermal hot-dry rocks, (e) solar, (f) biomass, (g) tidal and (h) Energy Technology Support Unit Services.

Expenditure on research, development and demonstration in renewable sources of energy in my Department's programmes in 1985–86 is estimated to have been £15.3 million (including expenditure on wastes as a fuel and passive solar design under the energy efficiency demonstration scheme and £2.1 million contributed by external contractors).

My Department's expenditure in individual technologies is estimated to have beeen as follows:
