HC Deb 17 November 1986 vol 105 cc66-7W
Mr. Winnick

asked the Paymaster General if he will list the electoral wards in the west midlands region where unemployment is above the national average and the percentage change since May 1979.

Mr. Lee

The information requested is not available. Unemployment rates are not calculated for areas smaller than travel-to-work areas. However, numbers of unemployed claimants in the electoral wards of the west midlands region from June 1983 are available in the Library.

Mr. Winnick

asked the Paymaster General if he will list those parliamentary constituencies in the United Kingdom where unemployment is above the national average, giving, in each case, the numbers of jobless now and in May 1979; and the percentage increase.

Mr. Lee

The information requested is not available. Unemployment rates are not calculated for areas smaller than travel-to-work areas. However numbers of unemployed claimants in the parliamentary constituencies of the United Kingdom from June 1983 are available in the Library.

Mr. Bermingham

asked the Paymaster General what is the total number of persons registered unemployed in the St. Helens area at the last date available.

Mr. Lee

The following information is in the Library. On 9 October 1986 the number of unemployed claimants in the St. Helens local authority area was 14,679.

Mr. Ralph Howell

asked the Paymaster General what is the number of claimants registered as unemployed in (a) employment benefit offices and (b) jobcentres throughout the United Kingdom in each of the regions in Liverpool, in Norwich and in the travel-to-work areas of Cromer and North Walsham (i) in October 1985 and (ii) in October 1986.

Mr. Lee

Information on the numbers of unemployed claimants registered at jobcentres is not available. The table gives the numbers of unemployed claimants signing on at unemployment benefit offices in the areas requested at October 1985 and October 1986. This information is available in the Library. Comparisons of unemployment figures between October 1985 and October 1986 are affected by the change in the timing of the compilation of unemployment statistics in March 1986.
