HC Deb 17 November 1986 vol 105 c73W
Mr. Hickmet

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what recent investigations have been carried out by the British Steel Corporation into energy conservation; and what savings or potential savings have been identified.

Mr. Giles Shaw

One of the corporation's continuing objectives is to reduce its energy costs. To this end, it maintains a programme of energy audits and adopts improvements in conservation and energy management wherever these are likely to be cost-effective. The details are a matter for the corporation.

Energy consumed per tonne of liquid steel produced fell from 25 to 21.2 gigajoules between 1980–81 and 1985–86.
