HC Deb 06 November 1986 vol 103 cc519-20W
35. Mr. Baldry

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the present average rate of wage increases in the United Kingdom; and what information he has as to how this compares with the United States of America, West Germany and Japan.

Mr. MacGregor

In the United Kingdom, underlying average earnings increased by 7½ per cent. in the year to August 1986. The most recent figures show earnings rising by 1.9 per cent. on a year earlier in the United States, by 1.7 per cent. in West Germany and by 2.1 per cent. in Japan.
