HC Deb 06 November 1986 vol 103 c485W
Mr. Peter Bruinvels

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what consideration has been given to the provision of motorway rest and picnic areas, in addition to motorway service areas; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

Consideration has been given to providing separate rest and picnic facilities. The costs are high and are unlikely to be offset by income from traders. It is preferable to provide full motorway service areas, with facilities for rest and picnics, at about 30-mile intervals. Our programme is for 20 new MSAs in addition to the 40 already opened.
