HL Deb 06 November 1986 vol 481 cc1243-4WA
Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is their estimate of the cost to British financial and other institutions of maritime fraud and what steps, domestic and international, they and others are taking to control it and bring perpetrators to justice.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Transport (Lord Brabazon of Tara)

The Government are not able to estimate the cost of maritime fraud to British institutions. Domestically, we are shortly to introduce a wide range of measures to improve the efficient investigation of all aspects of fraud, including maritime fraud. Internationally, we are playing a full and active role in UNCTAD discussions of proposals to reduce maritime fraud.
