Mr. Chris Smith

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) what are the latest available annual figures for the number of children received into care by reason of homelessness; and if he will give this information for England as a whole, and for each local authority area;

(2) what are the latest available figures for the number of children in local authority care where the reason for their admission into care was homelessness; and if he will give this information for England as a whole and for each local authority area.

The latest annual figures available are for the year ending 31 March 1984. The 1985 figures will be available shortly. A child may be taken into care for a number of reasons of which homelessness may be a contributory factor although not identified as a specific cause in the statistics. Information available on children in care where the specific cause is that their family has been made homeless is given in the following table:
