HC Deb 06 November 1986 vol 103 cc578-83W
Mr. Pawsey

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what has been the regional variation in the incidence of cervical cancer over the last five years; and if he will give, in total and by regional health authority, the number of (a) registrations and (b) deaths involving cervical cancer in each of those years.

Mrs. Currie

Statistics on the regional variation of the registrations of newly diagnosed cases of carcinoma of cervix uteri (ICD (9) 180) and of carcinoma in situ of cervix uteri (ICD (9) 233.1) for England and Wales for 1978 to 1982 are published in "Cancer Statistics", MBI Nos. 10–14 copies of which are in the Library. These show the numbers of registrations, the rate per 100,000 population and the standardised registration ratios at age under 75 for each regional health authority in tables 6, 7 and 8 respectively.

Statistics from 1981 to 1984 on the numbers of deaths with an underlying cause of carcinoma of cervix uteri and the standardised mortality ratios (SMR) by regional health authority are shown in table 5 and table 3 respectively "Mortality Statistics: area" DH5 No's 8–11. The number of deaths and the SMR's for 1985 are shown in the tables.

Mr. Pawsey

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how the incidence of cervical cancer in the United Kingdom compares with that in other countries for which he has information available; and if he will make a statement.

Mrs. Currie

It is the latest information currently available. Data for other countries not shown may be found in the volume, a copy of which is in the Library. World Health Organisation expects to publish more up to date figures shortly.

Mr. Dobson

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services when he expects to provide a substantive reply to the questions on cervical cancer by the hon. Member for Holborn and St. Pancras due for answer on 29 October.

Mrs. Currie

I am replying to the hon. Member today.

Mr. Maxwell-Hyslop

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what provision he proposes to make in his Department's estimates for 1987–88 for financing a three-yearly cervical smear test cycle as recommended by the British Medical Association.

Mrs. Currie

I refer my hon. Friend to my reply to my hon. Friend the Member for Rugby and Kenilworth (Mr. Pawsey) on 30 October at column237.

Mr. Dobson

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will list those health authorities which have district-wide computerised cervical cancer call and recall schemes in operation.

Mrs. Currie

[pursuant to her reply, 29 October 1986, c. 186]: Regional health authorities' outturn reports on short-term programmes showed that as at 31 March 1986 the following 33 health authorities had implemented computerised call and recall systems for cervical cancer screening:

Mr. Dobson

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will list those health authorities which do not have district-wide cervical cancer call and recall schemes in operation but which have plans to do so, giving the estimated date of introduction in each case.

Mrs. Currie
