HC Deb 04 November 1986 vol 103 cc401-2W
Mr. Galley

asked the Secretary of State for Energy what estimate he has of the number of people directly and indirectly employed in nuclear power generation.

Mr. Goodlad

The CEGB and SSEB currently employ over 11,000 people directly for nuclear power generation. Both the UKAEA and BNFL also generate electricity from some of their nuclear plant, but given the nature of their respective operations it is not possible to give a precise figure for the numbers employed in the generation of electricity. Overall, the nuclear industry directly employs about 44,000 people. Many thousands more are employed on the industry's major capital projects, in maintaining and servicing the industry's existing sites and in providing local infrastructure. Well over 100,000 jobs depend directly or indirectly on the industry.
