HC Deb 03 November 1986 vol 103 c313W
Mr. Madden

asked the Prime Minister who appoints persons to the Security Commission; for how long they are appointed; how many members consider any individual case; how many persons are now available to serve in any individual case; if any part of the consideration of any individual case is conducted in public; if any part of a Security Commission report or recommendations are made public; what is the Government's policy towards accepting any recommendations made by the Security Commission; and if she will make a statement.

The Prime Minister

Appointments to the Security Commission are made by the Prime Minister. Members are normally appointed for terms of three years and may be reappointed for a further term or terms. The commission comprises seven members from which a panel of three or four, including the chairman, are chosen to serve on each inquiry. The commission conducts its inquiries in private. Its findings are published as far as this is consistent with the requirements of national security. All recommendations made by the commission in recent years have been accepted by the Government.
