asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will list the number of people in receipt of a pension in respect of age in (a) 1979 and (b)

Mr. Lyell

The only state pension payable solely in respect of age is the non-contributory retirement pension for people aged over 80. Entitlement to state retirement pension is subject to contribution and retirement conditions in addition to the attainment of minimum pension age. Supplementary pension is payable from minimum pension age, provided the individual concerned is not in full-time work and income is below statutory requirements. The numbers of people in receipt of retirement and supplementary pensions on the dates for which information is available and which are the most relevant for the years specified are as follows:

Retirement Pension1

  • November 1978: 8,775,480
  • March 19862: 9,777,880

Supplementary Pension only

  • December 1978: 107,000
  • December 19852: 100,000

antibodies to the AIDS virus. No cases of AIDS virus transmission have been reported in patients given blood since that date. Before screening could be made available to the service, a small number of patients received blood infected with the virus. Two of these have since developed AIDS.

Mr. Gareth Wardell

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will publish in the Official Report the information available to him on the number of people being treated for acquired immune deficiency syndrome per 100,000 of the population in each Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development country for the past five years.

Information in the form requested is not available but the following figures show cumulative totals of cases reported to the World Health Organisation, together with an approximate rate per 100,000 population.
