HC Deb 03 November 1986 vol 103 c361W
Mr. Meacher

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will extend the use of milk tokens to the purchase of soya milk; and if he will make a statement.

Mrs. Currie

Where a clinical need exists, certain approved soya-based milks are available free on prescription to mothers and children who qualify for this benefit. Generally, however, I am advised that cows' milk is nutritionally better than soya milk as a source of energy, protein, calcium and other minerals, and certain vitamins essential for the growth of a healthy child. No change in the present welfare milk arrangements is therefore envisaged.
