HC Deb 03 November 1986 vol 103 cc345-6W
Mr. Roger King

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what negotiations he has had with Messrs. Arvoland of Cambridgeshire, manufacturers of remould tyres, about the danger of manufacturing and selling such tyres; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. David Mitchell

My officials have been in discussion with Arvoland Limited since receiving a report from Birmingham consumer protection officers last May. These discussions have included tests on remould tyres manufactured by Arvoland Limited to assess whether they are safe. The results show that tyres manufactured before April 1986 may not comply with the performance requirements of the Motor Vehicles Tyres (Safety) Regulations 1984.

The manufacturer has now agreed to withdraw from sales as quickly as possible tyres produced before this date. In addition, further action under the code of practice on tyre recalls agreed between the Department and relevant trade associations is being considered urgently.
