HC Deb 03 November 1986 vol 103 cc356-7W
Mr. Ashdown

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the average number of applications for invlaid care allowance (a) received by and (b) completed by his Department in each month, using the last year for which figures are available as a base.

Mr. Major

The table sets out the actual number of invlaid care allowance claims recieved from men and single women and, separately, from married women and the number of cases cleared in each month from October 1985 to September 1986. Because of the increase in claims from June 1986, a monthly average has not been calculated.

Men and single women Married women
Month Claims received Claims cleared Claims received Claims cleared1
April 868 909 1,013
May 595 775 1,539
June 738 884 2,900
July 1,735 698 7,925 21,386
August 1,561 1,092 7,904 347
September 6,230 2,029 33,676 3,604
1 The legislation extending ICA to married women received Royal Assent at end of July 1986. No awards could be adjudicated prior to Royal Assent.
2 Includes cases disallowed in earlier months because conditions other than marital status were not satisfied.

Mr. Ashdown

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will give a breakdown of the number of applications for invalid care allowance currently outstanding, showing the totals by numbers of months outstanding and giving an overall summary total.

Mr. Major

At 24 October 1986, the latest date for which figures are available, there were 66,500 claims from married women and 9,000 from men and single women outstanding. I regret that information is not collected in a form to provide the breakdown requested.
