HL Deb 22 May 1986 vol 475 cc538-9WA
Lord Sandford

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Why it is so rare for all three fountains in the lake of St. James's Park to be working properly and together.

Lord Elton

The fountains are frequently switched off because the feeder pumps become blocked with refuse and have to be cleared manually. Works to improve the quality of the water are currently being carried out to the pumping equipment, and a mechanical screen is being installed to clear the water before it is pumped to the fountains. The work should be completed in the next two or three weeks. Thereafter I hope that all the fountains will work regularly.
