HC Deb 22 May 1986 vol 98 c265W
Mr. Wareing

asked the Paymaster General what representations he has received about the adequacy of the retail prices index at reflecting the true rate of inflation for poorer households; if he is satisfied with the weightings given to various goods and services; whether he plans any changes; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Lang

I have received no direct representations, though I understand that the matter of price indices for different types of household is raised from time to time and I am aware of recent arguments in favour of producing a number of price indices. My right hon. and noble Friend is guided in these matters by the retail prices index advisory committee, an independent body with wide representation. The committee is expected to report shortly and any plans for changes will be announced subsequently.
