asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many people are currently held in prisons on remand awaiting trial; what were the comparable figures for 1 May 1983, 1984 and 1985, respectively; and if he will make a statement.

The readily available information is given in the table. Information on the number awaiting commencement of their trial is not available centrally and could be obtained only at disproportionate cost.
