HC Deb 22 May 1986 vol 98 c256W
19. Mr. Bellingham

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what progress there has been in relations between the police and the community they serve since the publication of the Scarman report.

Mr. Hurd

The Government and the police have responded positively to the recommendations made by Lord Scarman in 1981. Policing methods, training, recruitment and arrangements for consultation with the community have been substantially revised and are making a strong contribution to the development of police-community relations. The many imaginative initiatives taken by the police in recent years have been well received by local communities and the Government are giving the police every encouragement to continue with this important work.
